Schools of Skype

Skype in the classroom has much potential–conferencing with other classrooms, touring other parts of the world, and anything else imaginable that needs only a simple video/computer hook-up.  (The new iPhone’s video feature, for instance, makes the use of Skype for video purposes even more varied and rich.)

The concern, as always when using online tools in the classroom, is two-fold: 1. the IT infrastructure of the school–is there a reliable internet connection, and up-to-date computers? How flexible are firewall settings? 2. What kind of pedagogical support is there for teachers venturing into the techno-educational world?

None of these concerns merits shying away from using tools like Skype, but they must be addressed by administrators of schools wishing to use it.
