Why CUNY nearly Ditched Blackboard for Blogs

In this post from a few months ago, CUNY seriously debated using blogs like WordPress rather than Blackboard:

Blogs Instead of Blackboard – Technology – The Chronicle of Higher Education

The most convincing argument is that CMSs like Blackboard and Moodle, while indeed helping to organize a course online, still leave all of that rich learning behind the protected walls of a password-protected site.  What good is it doing there all locked up and un-linkable to students online sites?  Wouldn’t we want students (hyper)linking schoolwork to their Facebook profile?  It’s also worth noting that while a CMS like Moodle is free, schools still often pay for support from some kind of Moodle-expert company.  WordPress is free.  And it’s real.
